Indonesia, SFP Indonesia Fisheries Forum 14-15 November 2017
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership hosted an Indonesia Fisheries Forum November 14-15. One focus of the discussion centered on issues of compliance. I and Bambang of APRI facilitated a dialogue session on blue swimming crab. The discussion’s consensus called for better coordination between industry and government to produce effective management.
All stakeholders have a share in ensuring enforcement of regulations like harvest size limits and fishing gear. To achieve this, stakeholders can follow a three-pronged approach: (i) implementing a simplified control document (industry responsibilities), (ii) improving communication and education to fishers (University/NGO), and (iii) law enforcement (government)
Meeting with MMAF Secretary General, Jakarta 27 November 2017
On November 27th, I met with MMAF Secretary General Pak Sekjen in Jakarta. This marked the first time the Indonesian BSC sustainability effort has had an audience with the Secretary General.
The meeting proved successful as Secretary General has invited Minister Susi of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to attend the Crab Council’s coordinating meeting in December, which will elevate the Crab Council’s coordination efforts with government.
NCFRAM Annual Meeting, 22 November 2017
The National Commission for Fish Resources Assessment and Management (NCFRAM) held its annual meeting November 22nd. NCFRAM will be tasked for further defining sustainable fisheries management policy, in addition to fish stock assessment. Specific fisheries, such as BSC, that are relatively advanced in their FIPs are expected to pioneer the country’s overall sustainable fisheries development.
Progress of Central Java Governor Decree
As a follow up to Governor Regulation No.33/2017 released in August, the Governor of Central Java issued Governor Decree No. 523/93/2017 on the formation of Facilitation and Implementation Team for Sustainable BSC Fisheries Management in Central Java. The NFI Crab Council plays a vital role in chairing the Facilitation Team, advising and supervising the Implementation Team in executing programs and enhancing partnerships.
The issuance of the Decree will make it possible to utilize provincial resources, including budget and MCS, Security and Law Enforcement instruments that are available toward sustainable BSC fisheries management throughout the province of Central Java.
